d'Orlandos Do Dallas
May 16, 2014

"Brothers Michael and Nicholas take the bull by the horns and leave Texas winners"

Michael and Nicholas d'Orlando, the exceptionally successful kart racers from Hartsdale, New York - the boys are 12 and 11 years-old respectively - went large in Texas, racing two consecutive weekends in Dallas in two different events, both at the Dallas Karting Complex.

On April 26-27 they raced in the Texas Pro Kart Challenge, followed by the Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour SpringNationals on May 3-4.

Team Koene USA, led by Michael Maurini, used the TPKC race weekend as a test session of sorts, preparing for the more prominent SKUSA races. "We needed the boys to come to grip with a new facility, so we worked on chassis set-up and learning the track," said Maurini. "They both learned a lot every session; we were pleasantly surprised they were consistently at the front of the field."

With the TPKC "test session" successful, Michael and Nicholas - both race in the highly competitive TaG Cadet division - were in the right frame of mind for the big SKUSA races.

As they had done the week before at the TPKC, both d'Orlandos ran up front.

Between qualifying, heat races and finals on both days, Nicholas qualified on the front row once, finished in the top-five in all four heat races, then had a third and a fourth in the two finals. Well done.

Michael, on the other hand, had two distinctly different days. He dominated Saturday - qualified on pole, won both heat races, won the Main by nearly five seconds - but Sunday, well, that resulted in a lot fewer smiles.

The day began well, Michael again taking pole in qualifying, but he was involved in an incident on the heat one pace lap(!) and did not get a chance to race. That meant Michael had to start heat two from the 20th row, 40th position, and did well to slice his way to 19th by the checker. In the final, Michael roared through the field from that row-10 grid spot and was up to sixth and still charging… when, unfortunately, the race was shortened six laps due to an incident.

Thanks to a solid, successful weekend for both d'Orlandos in Dallas - at a track they hadn't even seen - Nicholas is second in the TaG points standings. Michael is third in points, just three tallies behind.

The next event for the SKUSA! Pro Tour Championship is the Summer Nationals night-time street race in August at Modesto, California. But, next up for the Brothers d'Orlandos is the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship at Mosport, this weekend, 17-18 May.
