NICHOLAS D’ORLANDO BRINGS HOME SECOND PLACE FINISH IN GRAND JUNCTION
July 2, 2015
It was another solid weekend for Nicholas d’Orlando in Grand Junction, CO for round two of the Rotax US Open series. This was the first time Nicholas raced at Grand Junction and he could be found near the front of the pack from day one.
He kicked off the weekend with a solid qualifying effort in third spot, followed up by a victory in heat one on Friday. He continued into Saturday’s racing with a dominant run in heat two leading every lap to take the win again. Continuing his efforts up front, he would finish heat race three and four in second, to fellow top competitor, Jak Crawford.
With his solid performance in the heats, Nicholas would head into the final on Sunday as the driver to beat. He started his No.115 KoeneUSA prepared Tony/Kart on the pole and had a great start to the race leading the pack for the first 10 laps. On lap 11 a charging Jak Crawford from second slot, caught Nicholas, to pass him for the lead. Nicholas did all he could to catch Crawford but he would run out laps to finish second.
“It was a pretty good weekend,” said Nicholas. “We had some good speed right from the start, on a track that I’ve never been to before. We continued to adjust to the changing track conditions throughout the weekend. I did well in the opening laps of the final. Unfortunately, even with the gap I had put between myself and Jak, when his kart came in, and he just caught up and passed me, he just pulled away. I am happy with the results this weekend in second place, but also looking forward to the Championship race in Las Vegas this October.”
