Nicholas d’Orlando has his sights set on a Formula Race Promotions F1600 series championship for 2021 and his performance at Carolina Motorsports Park this past weekend has proven he is a real contender.  The 18-year-old rookie from Hartsdale, NY, brought home two dominating victories at the facility already dear to his heart.

d’Orlando returned to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC for the first time since 2015, where he earned the United States MiniMax National Championship title in karting. This time, under the direction and support of Team Pelfrey, the goal was to achieve similar results on the new and improved resurfaced race car track in the season opener for the FRP series. The three-day event included a single test day and a single Qualifying run followed by three head-to-head races.

The testing on Thursday ended with some mechanical work to be addressed overnight but it clearly did not affect the rest of the weekend’s progress.  With the team setting up the perfect drafting strategy, d’Orlando lead the way in Friday’s Qualifying, ultimately securing the coveted Pole Position in the 15 car grid.  Even with starting on the inside of the front row, the race quickly went a little south when contact resulted in damage to d’Orlando's #81 race car in the opening lap.  Determined to stay in the fight, minus the nose cone on his car, he continued in the front pack trying to maintain the draft throughout the event until some further contact later in the race ended his run early.

Unphased by the events of Friday, d’Orlando was poised to redeem himself.  Based on the lap times from Race 1, he would line up for Race 2 inside row 2 in the third position.  In the opening laps he played it cool and patient before making his move to the point, and from there he never looked back.  Consistently setting fast lap times, d’Orlando eventually dropped the drafting cars behind and eased home to a dominating victory by over seven seconds.

"Going into the first official FRP race event I was a little skeptical." explains d'Orlando. "We worked hard for the two weeks leading up to it but I really wasn't sure how it would play out or what it was going to be like. I had expectations for myself to do well and hopefully take up a spot on the podium."

Narrowly missing the Pole Position for the third and final race, d’Orlando lined up on the outside of the front row but didn’t hold back. Jumping to the point coming out of turn 1 after the green flag, he would lead the entire race consistently pulling away from the rest of the field.  At the checkered flag, it was another commanding victory for the rookie just starting his career in car racing.

"Coming home with two wins, I can say I am pleasantly surprised with my performance." continues d'Orlando. "It was a super exciting weekend and ended on a high note. Now I'm really looking forward to carrying momentum onto Mid Ohio with the support of everyone at Team Pelfrey."

"After some adversity on Friday, Nicholas took total control of both race events on Saturday." states Geoff Bushor, Team Pelfrey owner/engineer. "His driving was near flawless, which allowed for the two dominant wins. We are really looking forward to Mid Ohio to see what he can accomplish there!"

d’Orlando will return to the Formula Race Promotions F1600 series at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH on April 30 – May 2, 2021. For further information about the FRP F1600 series, visit their website at
