Nicholas d’Orlando increased his victory count to six in the Formula Race Promotions F1600 Championship, racking up another two victories in dominating fashion at Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, PA.  The results in PA bring his season total to nine podiums, while also expanding his lead in the drivers’ championship points race.  Although it was another strong weekend for the rookie, it was not without challenges.

The three-day event kicked off relatively smooth but definitely did not end that way.  After showing times in the top three of the charts in the opening rounds of the single day of practice, disaster struck to end the day.  In the final session, d’Orlando’s #81 Team Pelfrey prepared four time race winning Honda HPD race engine experienced complete mechanical failure.  With the official Qualifying session scheduled first thing the next morning,  the pressure was on for the Team Pelfrey squad to get the Mygale Formula F race car back on the grid to contend for more championship results.

Working late into the evening hours, with a borrowed power plant, Team Pelfrey’s efforts paid off.  d’Orlando didn’t skip a beat back in the seat Saturday morning and ultimately put himself in the third qualifying position for the start of Race 1 that afternoon.  But the challenge wasn’t over. Mother Nature played a fickle hand. As the 27-car grid completed their warmup lap, the entire field would return to pit lane while series’ officials and maintenance crews cleaned up an oil situation on track.  During this time, the weather looked to be clearing but rain was possible at any moment.  This was increasingly stressful for the Team Pelfrey camp as d’Orlando waited in line as one of only a handful of cars setup with rain tires versus a stacked field with racing slicks.  But the rain setup decision proved pivotal when the restart kicked off 40 minutes later than scheduled.  As the skies dumped more water on the track with each passing lap, d’Orlando stayed strong out front to another dominating victory by over 15 seconds.

d’Orlando’s fast lap in Race 1 positioned him to start in the Pole Position for Race 2 the next morning, and he learned quickly that Pittsburgh International is a drafting track in dry conditions.  After a great start, he took the point in lap one, but continued to swap back and forth between first and second in the drafting group in the opening laps. The battle continued throughout the initial nine laps and it was looking like another podium finish for the 18-year-old rookie….until it wasn’t.  d’Orlando also learned quickly that any mistakes are unforgiven in Pittsburgh and ultimately he would retire from the event early after an off-track excursion ended his pursuit of another victory.

Race 3 that afternoon continued in clear weather conditions and d’Orlando was back on the front row again to start.   His determination and focus returned to the forefront with a mission in hand for another victory that afternoon, and redemption for the morning’s disappointing results.  His mission was accomplished with another dominating performance leading green flag to checkered flag for the entire race, bringing home another incredible victory and another fastest race lap to add to the resume.

“Looking back at the weekend, I had a great time as usual. “ states Nicholas d’Orlando. “It took a lot of teamwork to make it all happen and I was very happy with the car.  Even in the rain, we showed we could be dominant.  The team worked really hard and we overcame some struggles to push our way back to the top, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do at Road America in a few weeks.”

Nicholas d’Orlando will return to the Formula Race Promotions F1600 series on July 30 - August 1, 2021 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. For further information about the FRP F1600 series, visit their website at Race fans can catch Live Timing on the Race Monitor app.
