The podium results continue for Nicholas d’Orlando in the Formula Race Promotions F1600 series, and after the last round at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL his count now stands at 16, including ten victories.  The 18-year-old Hartsdale, NY native faced some difficult competition at Autobahn but his tenacity and consistently make him the top driver of the field as he is still sitting top of the charts in the Drivers’ Championship.  With only one more race weekend left, d’Orlando is looking to solidify his first series championship in his short car racing career.

d’Orlando set the pace in Saturday’s Qualifying session, giving him the opportunity to lead the 16-car field to the green flag for the start of Race 1.  Although he would get shuffled back to the fourth position in the opening corners, his qualifying pace continued throughout the event and he was able to close a three second gap.  Ultimately making a solid pass to the front, he would take another win resulting in his 10th victory of the 2021 season.  His consistent race pace also earned him the pole position for Race 2 the next morning.

Sunday morning’s Race 2 went a little different with d’Orlando feeling the heat throughout the duration.   From the point position in lap four, he couldn’t shake all the competition, and the top two of them broke away from the field to a gap of over 10 seconds.  In the final corners, the battle endured between them, and at the checkered flag d’Orlando would narrowly miss the victory by a smigid, although adding another second place podium to his resume.

The third and final race of the weekend later that afternoon, got a little hairy.  It was the closest racing the F1600 class had seen all weekend.  There would be no leader to take control for the duration.  There would be no break away from the group.   It came down to the final two laps and closing corners to determine who would take the victory… the championship leader of d’Orlando, his teammate proving that Pelfrey Power is serious business or the competition who’s been breathing down his neck all weekend long.  And as the three mixed it up throughout the 17-lap event, the drafting train found d’Orlando crossing the line in the third position for his 16th podium of the season.

“As a whole, Autobahn was another good weekend for Team Pelfrey and I.” says d’Orlando. “We scored three podium results and gathered crucial points towards extending our drivers’ championship lead. I was happy with the team effort and our pace from the start. It was nice to be able to be back at a track that I’ve at least seen before, [d’Orlando tested at the circuit only once previously], because we have no historical data there from the series. I think it was a really good learning experience and I enjoyed this circuit.  I’m now looking forward and focused on the job to seal the championship win at the final race weekend of the series at Pitt Race in October.”

d'Orlando will return to action in the Formula Race Promotions F1600 series on October 15-17, 2021 at Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, PA. He currently remains at the top of the charts in the drivers' championship heading into this final weekend of the season.
